Under the epidemic situation, more and more Japanese eat at home, and meat substitutes based on soybean protein are being sought after at this stage.

Japan Times reported on the 27th that Japan's meat substitutes market is experiencing a sales boom, with many food producers seizing the opportunity to launch more meat substitutes. For example, the Japanese ham food company, a food processing giant, launched five kinds of sausages made of soybeans and konjac in March; the fast-food chain "moss food" began to sell a sandwich with vegetables and grains as the main ingredients in May, excluding dairy products and other animal products; a large miso producer sold a kind of dried bean powder to replace minced meat cooking.Sales of meat substitutes based on plant materials are expected to increase to 34.6 billion yen (about 2.23 billion yuan) this year, and 78 billion yen (5.02 billion yuan) by 2030, according to seed plan, a market research firm.

Some meat substitutes began to attract consumers' attention around last year, the Japan Times reported, citing several industry sources. These products are made of defatted soybean by high temperature and high pressure processing, and then added with water and other raw materials. They are rich in cellulose and low in fat, and taste similar to meat, so they are favored by different groups of people. Since the outbreak of the epidemic this year, many people have been unable to eat out, or they have to cook at home and have to order takeaway food. In addition, people pay more and more attention to healthy diet and the impact of meat production on the environment, which has boosted the popularity of meat substitutes in Japan
