5(Xinhua News Agency Madrid(Fengjunwei Xieyuzhi) Luyisi·maerke·ajiliyanuo, Spain's state secretary in charge of EU affairs on behalf of the government summoned the U.S. ambassador to Spain, Duke·baken, to protest the U.S. government plans to impose tariffs on some EU imports.
The Spanish Prime Minister's Office issued a statement on the evening of the 4th, saying that the Spanish government firmly opposes the United States to impose tariffs on a series of EU imports to the United States and hopes that the United States can realize that it is necessary to reach an agreement within the next few weeks. "To avoid undermining the spirit of cooperation and understanding that characterizes bilateral relations."
The statement stressed that if the United States Government rejected the offer of dialogue made by Spain and the European Union, the Spanish Government would immediately respond in a firm and unequivocal manner to defend the interests of its citizens and businesses.
The statement also said that Spanish Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Luyisi·pulanasi will travel to Brussels next week to attend an internal meeting of the European Commission to discuss necessary and urgent response measures.
The World Trade Organization ruled on the 2nd that the United States will have the right to impose tariffs and other measures on approximately US$ 7.5 billion of EU goods and services exported to the United States each year because the European Union and some of its member states have not fully implemented the relevant rulings before the WTO dispute settlement agency. Immediately after the ruling was issued, the U.S. Trade Representative's Office stated that it plans to impose tariffs on a series of EU imports to the United States.
Spanish EAE business school professor Anheer·luyisi commented that the additional tariffs will eventually be paid by American consumers. Once tariffs are imposed, Spanish wine, olive oil, and cheese lovers in the United States can only afford higher prices for related products.
According to the data provided by the Spanish Food and Beverage Industry Federation, the United States is the largest export market for Spanish food and beverages outside the European Union. Spain exports more than 1.7 billion euros worth of food and beverages to the United States each year.
